Day 41 : River Erme to Bolberry Downs: A bit gloomy

So the schedule is a bit all over the place as I have the family here and can be ferried around a bit: My rest day was not a rest day so trying to knock a few miles off whilst I have the transport and the motivation. If you ever go anywher on holiday, check where the Kemps are going, because be assured if they are there it will be raining. And so it was as Richard got us down some pretty tight country lanes to get us close to the East side of the Erme. The first mile and a half was a romp along lanes that turned into dirt tracks, a moat formed on the road and paths through fields, but Richard enjoys his DOE work and knows how to get us on the path. THe clouds were pretty angry and the drizzle and mizzle was trying to dampen out spitits but we were having none of that. The pth is fairly friendly and then we climb to get out of Hoist Point, quite a climb early on. We work our way to the lovely Challaborough beach and th not so lovely Challaborough holiday park. Refreshments smell good but we resist as we have to be at the river Avon between 10.00 and midday to get the ferry. We round the headland at Warren Point and the wonderful Burgh Island comes into view. There is a causeway across to the island, and I am told that the art deco hotel is worth visiting, but not today. 2 miles inland we drop to the ferry point with time to spare, but no ferryman in site. The sign says “ring the bell and wave at the thatched boathouse” we duly ablige, to be greeted by a whisrle 500 yards back down the estuary. The ferryman is a jolly chap and his dog stands guard at the front of the boat as we cross. The weather is now starting to close in but there are still people out kits surfing, wake boarding, surfing and making the most of it in true British spirit. We head through a car park and rest at a really funky airstream, with two great characters serving in their own time. Refreshed and revived we head towards our pick up destination at Hope Cove, some hope and no hope. We are well ahead of schedule, my son in law is six foot two, and he takes one stride for my three so we are motoring. The family are still having fun at a water park in Torquay, so we decide to press on not really taking much notice of the weather system enveloping us. A climb out of Hope, and out on to the headland at Bob Tail, the site of an ancient monastery. Now the weather Gods are not happy the inshore winds are pusing us all over the place and the rain is starting to hurt as it hits our faces. We cut slightly inland for some restbite and can see nothing of our destination at Bolberry Down. We press on and eventually head North to reach the village of Bolberry, and our carriage pulls up to rescue us from the elements. An exhilarating walk another 20 Kl, and leaves me a small section into Salcombe to tidy up in the next two days. The family have had a lot of fun, and Richard and I have enjoyed taking on the path in all weatehrs in one day. A warm bath is now on the menu. The wife arrives this evening, better tidy up the hotel room. The photos show where we have been, there are some lov
