This is described in the SWCP guide book as “probably the most arduos of all the days in the suggested itinerary. It is necessary to cross ten river valleysto complete the length, all of them steep and deep.”
They were not joking. Thankfully we (Dave Clarke) and I were joined by Ezza, one of Gav’s mates from Loughborough. He turs up looking like he is going for a football training session, with shorts and trainers. Dave is not at the start point, so panic sets in when he is not answewring his phone. Eventually he appears and the two of them start chirping away, why did I send my ear phones home ? Ezza is rewarded with his trail name MouthyGoat, and is lapping it up, what a great guy, he skips along as if we are walking along a promonade, not a mountain range as it feels to me. Some of the most dramatic coastline I have ever seen, the geology at Hartland Quay is like nothing I have ever seen, as was the sunset last night. We climb and drop, climb and drop, and Ezza is still talking away, mostly to himself now. This is without doubt a magical part of our wonderful country, Waterfalls, secret coves and beaches, the rather strange listening centre for GCHQ, and eventually into Bude. A long and very rewarding day, I think I need a beer.
