After a lovely evening in Dartmouth with Waity and Heady, we were up early for breakfast to prepare for another river crossing and what is described as a strenous section of the SWCP. Dartmouth looks resplendent in the early morning sun, it really feels like a very nice town. Chris H and I board the rather strange ferry that is a tug pushing a pontoon taking both cars and foot passengers across the river to Kingswear. Once off the ferry the fun began almost immediately with a very steep climb out of the village and into a lovely wooded section. Past Mill Bay cove we are now going up and down like a yo yo and we arrive at some old battery buildings at Forward Point. We chat to the National Coastwatch look outs and they focus there equipment on some seals on a local rock, whilst logging the movement of the pleasure boats exiting the Dart estuary. Theses guys are all volunteers and monitor the coastline of the UK to assist the other agencies and all persons using the sea and land adjacent to it. We start to head where we think the path will take us to be told, “no back that way, you are now entering Hell’s Triangle”. Hmmm. Well 200 steps down, past more gun encasements we start to turn and almost straightaway climb, this sequence continues until we reach Kelly’s cove. Chris is now calling the climbs by something I cannot print but we push on to Pudcombe Cove and another big up and down, with the sun now sending the tempreture into the low 20’s. Some respite as we head around Scabbscombe Head, and we sight the lovely beach at Scabbscombe sands, the water looks very inviting and there are plenty of people taking advantage of such a fine day. We then have to climb Southdown Cliff to reach Sharkham Point, Chris has now run out of expletives, water and oxygen, and that was a very tough climb. But we happily push on towards Berry Head where we have information that there is a refreshment cafe. Berry Head seems to go on forever, but we see the little ice cream sign and can recharge our systems for the first time in nearly 9 miles. Once past Berry Head it is a nice walk into Brixham through another wooded section and then on the coast Road. It is the weekend of the Torquay Air Show so we are treated to a dog fight in the distance and the constant rumble of aircraft old and new. Into Brixham and the place is alive with people once again enjoying the glorious day. So a tough day, and some very serious ascents 2,992 ft in total, we meet two guys training for the Three Peaks they have picked the right location that is for sure. But another lovely day and Chris tells me that is the best walk he has done in years, so rest time and see if we can beat the masses to dinner somewhere.
