An overcast Wednesday morning on Mevagissey quay side saw Iain and I meet my Nephew Jamie, who had attempted to take the path on in the opposite direction yesterday, and found that it is not a simple walk. However, revived fit and raring to go we set off out of the lovely working port, with another first hour and a half of up and downs. Around Penare Point we arrive in the small hamlet of Pentewen, two pubs a lovely beach and a big but sensitive holiday park, a nice place for families I would say. We then climb steadily in mainly meadows and wooded areas until the headland at Black Head. The route then takes you high into more wooded areas, and the sea is a sound not a sight. This is still quite enchanting and we pass Ropehaven, where Madeleine once rented a cottage that was only accessible by sea. Two beautiful little coves wrap themselves around Silvermine point, where we have to tackle a flight of steps that seem to go to the depths of the earth, and then rise towards the sky. Fair to say the banter is quiet as we all recover and the beach at Porthpean offers tea, cake and oxygen. Jamie is now fully in his stride and enjoying going in the opposite direction to yesterday, he also has the knowledge that the worst of the contours are covered for the day. After Du Porth we arrive in Charlestown, which is something straight off of a film set, and indeed it is often used for screen and TV, most notably Poldark. From here the landscape changes with a more rural feel to our North. A stop at the lookout Station at Landrion Point is very interesting and is probably the highlight of the final hour of the walk today. From here you literally skirt a golf course, with grumpy men and women not acknowledging how polite we are being, and then you hit the industrial wasteland of West Par, china clay works. A lot of redundant mamouth factory buildings, with very few in operation. The path then follows a fenced in alley for a good kilometre and the lovely path feels just a little below par. Lovely to spend a day with Jamie and Iain, another 12 miles clocked up, 370 in total now.
