After an interesting evening spent in the garage conversion, it was nice to see the sun shining over Perranporth. This was to be a day of totally different landscapes highlighted by the remains of many mines and the spoil that results. A tough section of the path in my opinion with some nasty accents and decents on very dodgy steps or loose shale, but that is the make up, so you have to get on with it. The surf boys and girls were out all along the route today, probably working from home. Some great names on route, firstly Shag Rock, and a climb to Cigga Head. A flat section brings relief past Perranporth Airfield, drop down into Cross Combe and Blue Hills Tin Mine. Up and down again to Trevaurance cove, and a long stretch through a lunar landscape until you reach St Agnes Head. Passing Tubby’s Head, you then pass one of the most famous, filmed and photographed engine house at Towanroath. You get a real sense of what life must have been like for the tin miners, pretty bleak and dangerous. A steep drop into Porthtowan, with its lovely beach, and climb again past a number of disused quarries, and another abandoned airfield. The steps up and down at Sally’s Bottom are some of the most difficult to date, and then into Portreath, interseting town with a real mix of housing. So I had to work for my corn today, 11 miles officially, 12.5 on Strava and over 300 feet of accent. I am now 214 miles into the journey, and everyday still brings something different and interesting.
