After a lovely meal with Keith Smith, I set my alarm early as the forecast was for worsening rain as the day went on, on Monday. So on the path by 07.45 after stealing as much fruit and biscuits as I could from the breakfast buffet. A climb up out of the lovely Morgan Port on to the very exposed headland at Berryl’s point. A greeting from the 40 MPH South Westerly wind had me very much concentrating where my feet were landing. Another stretch of points and bays to my right, and the beginning of the sprall of Newquay on my left, with the airport runway lights clear in the distance. The fantastic Watergate Bay was soon in sight, but the weather as forecast was starting to close in and the surf beaches did not look as appealing under the threatening sky. Trevelgue Head was imposing and the winds are now thankfully pushing me back in land, so it was nice to drop down into the surf schools at Watergate Bay with some shelter. Up again and down into Porth Beach, and then Lusty Glaze, with the main town of Newquay now imposing itself on the path. It was a relief to get past Newquay Station and the area surrounding it, and back around Towan Beach and the Island where someone is having the house refurbished, what a great spot. Out on to Towan Head and the absolutely stunning Fistral Bay, full of nutcases throwing themseles around in the mad surf. The plan had worked I missed the really rubbish weather that is with me now, but only to be told I still had to wait two hours for my room to be ready. So a mixed bag of a day, with lovely and ugly all rolled in together.
